Silver Denarius “Tribute Pennies” (Plus others Biblical era Denarius coins)
When asked about paying taxes, Jesus Christ asked in Luke 20:24 to see a “denarius”. He did not just ask to see any currency, as the local currency coined by the procurators had no images of people. The “widow’s mite” coins which still circulated from the pre-Roman Hasmonian period of Jewish history, had no images of people either. The shekel used for the Temple tax, sadly and paradoxily had the face of Hercules on it. So to get His point across, Jesus had to ask for a denarius, which had the face of Ceasar. These coins are rare and generally not found in hoards. See below for note regarding the Augustus Denarius.

Augustus Denarius
Note regarding the Augustus Denarius vs. the Tiberius Denarius. The Tiberius Denarius is dubbed the “Tribute Penny” since Caesar Tiberius was ruling during the time of Christ’s ministry, and in Luke 20:24, Christ spoke in the present tense about “who’s image is on the coin”. However, it is the Augustus Denarius coins that have mostly been located in Israel. Some Tiberius coins have also been found there which were most probably brought to Israel by travelers and Roman soldiers. Some historians have speculated that in actuality, it it may have been the Augustus Denarius that was the true “Tribute Penny” referred to in Luke 20:24.
