Herodian Coins

Starting with Herod the Great and following with his heirs, there were different Herods who ruled Israel during the two centuries surrounding the time of Christ.   For an interesting detailed study into these various Herods, go to http://www.livius.org/he-hg/herodians/herod_the_great01.html and from there you can click the links to the other Herods. There are also other very informative and educational sites on the internet regarding the various Herods.
Each of these Herods minted coins unique to their reign.  Biblicalmites is pleased to offer some of these Herodian coins for purchase shown below.

    Herod The Great
40 BCE - 4 CE
Herod the Great rebuilt the Temple but also placed on top of the gate of the new Temple, a golden eagle, a symbol of Roman power in the heart of the holy city causing resentment by all pious Jewish believers. Herod also issued a small prutah coin with the symbol of an eagle minted on it, thus issuing currency with a graven image on the coin.  Another very plentiful coin minted by Herod the Great was a prutah which used the anchor image borrowed from the coins of Alexander Jannaeus and the Cornucopias image borrowed from coins minted by John Hyrnicus and John Hyrnicus II.

   Herod Archelaus
 (Lived 23BC - 6AD) Ruled from 4BC-6AD
Herod Archelaus: Jewish leader, ruler of Samaria, Judaea and Idumea between 4 BCE and 6 CE. His rule was disastrous and he was sent into exile by the Roman emperor Augustus.  It was because of Herod Archelaus’ cruel rule and unpopular reputation that Jesus’ parents were afraid to return to the territories ruled by Archelaus and therefore settled in Galilee (Matt. 2:22).
